When should I use an infographic?

This is a question that demands a bit of considered thinking. I have helped organisations justify the development of an infographic by asking some or all of the following questions:

• Do you have a lot of text to present that could include descriptions of processes, relationships, flows and choices?
• Do you need to communicate to an audience with little time to absorb your message?
• Do you need to overcome language or communication barriers?
• Do you just want to make an impression with something that looks cool rather than just reads well?

You may have other reasons for wanting/needing an infographic, and these are valid too. The bottom line is that we have a lot of presentation and delivery options available for any of your business communications. It is tempting to fill the world with copious amounts of text and even too many diagrams, illustrations and pictures (infographics included). Let's strike a good balance and make effective use of these clear ways of sharing and learning.
