Is experience the best teacher?

It could be argued that yes indeed experience is the best teacher for many skills and abilities. But, to qualify this more carefully, it is only really GOOD experience that is the best teacher if you want to deliver the best results. You could spend a lifetime accumulating a vast amount of experience in a certain skill, only to learn you could have used different techniques that would produce time savings and improved quality. It is the old adage of climbing a ladder that is leaning against the wrong wall.

Of course, experience in the creative world is a fantastic asset to bring to the table as it gives the creative leader a wealth of past work and projects to draw from. But this is only truly valuable for innovative thinking if the past is used as one of the inspiring thoughts and not 'the' motivator.
