What does that button do?

As a child I got to visit the Natural History and Science Museums in London quite regularly. The most exciting things to me were to find the glass-cased displays that had a lit button below the case. Each were labeled with the words 'press' or 'start' or 'go' and when they were pressed the display would have some element that would come alive and move, speak or change in some way. I didn't seem to need permission to press them and so it I quickly became 'tuned in' to walk into the different museum galleries and home in to the buttons that could be pressed.

The popular user-interface technology of today like mobile devices, ATMs, voice recognition TVs etc all utilise the human inquisitive nature to internally ask "What does that button do?" Any we have all found the answer by simply pressing it!

The real mystery then lies behind the button. We happily press away and have grown to expect some fantastic, and now somewhat taken-for-granted, display of technical wizardry. There is still a lot of work that has to go on behind the scenes to connect the button with the 'wow' display.
