We don't do marketing!

I once spoke with a fairly senior manager in a large organisation who made the statement that "We don't do marketing!" From what I knew of the organisation I felt that they most certainly did. They may have labelled it in a non-traditional way (they didn't have a 'Marketing' Manager, etc) but they certainly did market their products and services.

Other businesses have made the same statement and it has been blatantly true - they did no marketing! As a consequence, their customer base grew slowly, work came in sparadicaly and they didn't fully capitalise on repeat customer orders (amongst other things).

The last perspective is from a business that made the same statement but then qualified their very marketing focused approach as this, "We don't just do marketing as if it is a scheduled task for the week. We operate under a constant marketing philosophy and weave the principles into everything we are about." Bravo!
